The tenth season of Friends aired from September 25, 2003 to May 6, 2004 on NBC in the US and is the very last of the series. It is the shortest season of Friends, only having 18 episodes as opposed to the usual 24.

Season summary

Joey and Rachel decide to begin a relationship and, although initially upset, Ross gives the two his blessing. However the budding romance is cut short when they find they are unable to consummate the relationship. The two decide they were better off being friends and break up. Ross also begins dating Charlie, but this relationship is also short lived and she returns to an ex-boyfriend, Benjamin Hobart, unceremoniously dumping him.

Monica and Chandler prepare to adopt a baby, and are cleared by the adoption agency before being selected by a girl from Ohio named Erica. With this development, Monica and Chandler decide they don't want to raise their child in the city and buy a house in the suburbs.

Phoebe and Mike continue their revived relationship, and a few months later Mike decides to propose again. This time Phoebe accepts, and the two get married soon after.

Rachel loses her job at Ralph Lauren, but is offered a better one in Paris. Ross is upset about this, and feels even worse when Rachel doesn't say a proper goodbye to him at her leaving party despite giving one to everyone else. A hurt and angry Ross confronts Rachel, and she tells him that saying goodbye to him is too hard. They end up sleeping together, but Rachel remains determined to move to Paris.

Erica gives birth but to twins, a boy and a girl. Monica and Chandler adopt both and prepare to move out of the city. Ross, along with Phoebe, realizes he is still in love with Rachel, rushes to the airport, confesses his feelings and begs her to stay. She tearfully apologizes and gets on the plane anyway. Heartbroken, Ross returns to his apartment where he gets an answering machine message from Rachel who realizes she feels the same way. The message cuts off as she attempts to get off the plane, just as Rachel appears in the doorway. The two finally get back together, determined to make their relationship work this time. The final scene takes place in Monica's apartment, now empty, as the gang prepare to move on with their lives. The series ends with them going to Central Perk for one last coffee together.
