Friends Central

"The One With Joey's Fridge" is the nineteenth episode of the sixth season of Friends, which aired on March 23, 2000. In it, Joey's fridge breaks and he tries to get anyone to buy him a new one, Rachel is desperate for a date to a charity ball, and Ross is paranoid when his new girlfriend goes on Spring Break without him.

Plot[]

Joey's fridge is broken and he tries to get everyone to pay for his fridge, due to his financial struggles. He decides to eat all the food in it and to get others to pay for it. First he asks Rachel, who refuses because she's only just moved in and then asks Chandler, who refuses because he lives with Monica now. Getting desperate, Joey even goes as far as shoving Ross into the fridge and accusing him of breaking it, then asking him to pay.

Rachel is looking for a date for a charity ball and asks her friends for help in finding a guy. Phoebe, Chandler and Monica look for one. Phoebe finds a guy and Chandler and Monica find one so they have a big competition to get Rachel pick their guy; Monica and Chandler say theirs is funny, smart and has great hair, but that Phoebe's does volunteer work and is good-looking.

Joey suspects Ross broke his fridge.

Joey suspects Ross broke his fridge.

Ross mistakenly believes that Elizabeth wants to go to Spring Vacation with him. When Chandler tells him the difference between Spring Vacation and Spring Break, Ross panics and thinks that maybe Elizabeth will get carried away with guys; he discovers a very revealing bathing suit, too. However, Elizabeth assures him that, much to his relief, she's just going on vacation with her good friends.

Rachel introduces a guy she decides to take to the ball to Monica, Chandler and Phoebe. However, the three of them drive him away by comparing him to the guys they've chosen, and Rachel gets upset. Another day, when Rachel is at Central Perk, they arrive with their two guys and urge Rachel to take one, arguing at the same time. Rachel gets angry and tells them that she'd rather go alone than have them be like this.

At the end of the episode, it is shown that Elizabeth's friends consist of frat boys, so Ross decides to go too to prevent her from seeing other guys.

Quotes[]

Chandler: [Elizabeth quickly leaves after Ross introduced her to the gang] So why is she leaving? Is it a school night and she has a lot of homework to do?
Ross: Yes. Her molecular epidemiology paper is due tomorrow.
Chandler: Tell her good luck with that.
Ross: Anyone else, huh? Bring 'em on.
Rachel: Oh, when's her birthday?
Ross: I don't know, Rachel. Why?
Rachel: Well, you know, it's been so long since I've been to Chuck E Cheese.

Monica: Chandler, do you think we talk about our relationship enough?
Chandler: Yeah. Do we have any Fruit Roll-Ups?

Phoebe: [Rachel needs a date for the charity ball] Okay, I just thought of the perfect guy for Rachel to take to her thing.
Chandler: Oh, that’s so funny because we found someone too.
Phoebe: Oh, that’s good. I guess she’ll have a choice between my guy and your weirdo.
Chandler: Why would our guy be a weirdo?
Phoebe: ‘Cause that’s just your taste.
Monica: [laughs sarcastically] Rachel is not going to pick your stupid guy.
Phoebe: Oh, yeah?
Monica: Yeah!
Phoebe: My guy is a lawyer who has volunteer work. And, he has one of these. [squeezes the skin on her chin together to form...]
Chandler: A face ass?
Phoebe: A chin dimple!
Monica: Well, uh, you know, our guy works with Chandler and he’s really nice and smart, and he’s a great dresser!
Phoebe: Have you seen your guy’s body?
Chandler: No, our guy is just a floating head.
Phoebe: Well, my guy is spectacular. Okay? He’s a massage client and one time, um, when he was on the table, I looked at it. And I mean all of it.
Monica: You’re not supposed to look!
Phoebe: Oh, yeah, like there are police for that!
Chandler: [horrified] Wait! You look? You... you massaged me.
Phoebe: I know. [laughs]
Monica: All right. Fine, your guy may have a great body, but our guy is really funny.
Phoebe: Oh, Chandler funny?
Monica: Our guy’s a great dancer!
Phoebe: My guy is well read.
Chandler: Our guy has great hair.
Phoebe: My guy has great teeth!
Chandler: Our guy smells incredible.
Monica: [to Chandler] Do you want our guy to be your guy?

Chandler: You don't look good, Joe.
Joey: The fridge broke. I had to eat everything. Cold cuts, ice cream, limes. Hey, what was in that brown jar?
Chandler: That's still in there?
Joey: Not anymore. By the way, you owe me $400.
Chandler: Is this a service you're providing me?

Joey: Suppose we were a divorced couple.
Chandler: Uh-huh.
Joey: And I got custody of the kid, right? Now suppose the kid dies and... and I gotta buy a new kid.
Chandler: [looking confused] Okay...
Joey: [pause] GIVE ME $400!

[Chandler, Joey and Ross are talking about Elizabeth]
Joey: Or you can just, you know...
[Pushes Ross into his fridge]
Ross: What the hell are you doing?
Joey: What? What the hell am I doing? You just broke my fridge!
Ross: What? What? How do you even know it's broken?
Joey: Oh-ho-ho! You think I don't know what breaks my fridge? Excuse me. [Opens the fridge door and feels inside] Well. What do you know? Broken! That'll be $400.
Chandler: Joey, I saw you push him.
[Silence]
Joey: You pushed him!
Ross: Joey, I did not break this, okay? [Sniffs inside it] That has been broken for a while.
Joey: [Seriously] All right. Chandler, do you remember how I told you about our fridge?
Chandler: Uh-huh.
Joey: I still haven't gotten a check for your half yet.
Ross: Do not give him any money!
[Joey turns to Ross]
Joey: I'm not talking to you, you broke my fridge!

Ross: [about Elizabeth's spring break] What if she goes down and... and sleeps with a bunch of guys?
Chandler: Well, maybe you don't marry this one.

[Elizabeth is packing for spring break]
Ross: I'm just being supportive. Supportive of you and this whole trip, and... and... [holding a tiny swimsuit from Elizabeth's suitcase] What... what is, uh... what's this?
Elizabeth: It's a bathing suit.
Ross: To wear in front of people?
Elizabeth: Is that supportive?
Ross: [holding up swimsuit] Is this?

Trivia[]

  • In the uncut DVD version of the episode when the gang are talking about spring break in Central Perk, Joey blames Elizabeth for his broken fridge.
  • Rachel tells Joey "thank god you're pretty". She told him in "The One With The Jam", "you're so pretty".
  • When you rent an apartment in NYC, the landlord provides the appliances. So if Joey's fridge broke, he would not pay to replace it, the landlord would be obligated to replace it.
  • In 1981, spring break would have been in Fort Lauderdale. It didn't move to Daytona until after Fort Lauderdale put obstructive barricades down the strip mu later in the decade. Anyhow, MTV didn't begin covering spring break until 1986.
  • When Joey is breaking the fridge in the beginning of the episode, the Magna-Doodle has two guys surfing drawn on it.
  • Rachel goes to a charity event by herself in this episode. Later in the series, she takes Phoebe and Joey to another charity event (a silent auction), where the latter ends up buying a boat.
  • The gang mocks Ross for dating Elizabeth in much the same way they did when Monica dated Ethan in "The One With The Ick Factor" (S1E22). However, Ethan was a high school student whereas Elizabeth is 20.
  • In the final scene, Rachel calls Ross "Professor Geller". Rachel is the second member of the gang to refer to him as Professor Geller; she was also the second group member to be heard acknowledging him as a doctor.
  • Eldad is the second of Chandler's colleagues whom he tries to set up with Rachel. Previously he set her up with Patrick, with whom she slept on their first date but who dumped her after Chandler said Rachel was looking for a serious relationship. Coincidentally, the guy Phoebe brings is also called Patrick.
  • After Sebastian has left, Phoebe tells Rachel "you don't want someone who scares easily". Rachel told Ross that Joshua "apparently scares easily" after Joshua had rejected her marriage proposal in "The One With All The Wedding Dresses" (S4E20).
  • When Joey is telling Chandler that the fridge broke and he had to eat all the food, he is eating a tub of Ben & Jerry's ice cream.
  • Joey demands $400 from all his friends for the fridge except Monica.
  • Chandler mentions that the guy that Rachel will take to a charity ball had to have at least 50 dollars (to rent a tuxedo) and Joey says "Oh, so close". He refers to that he doesn't have 50 dollars. When Matt LeBlanc was cast as Joey, he only had 11 dollars to his name.
  • This episode marks the final appearance of the 1994 Warner Bros. Television logo before it was retired and replaced with the 2000 short-lived Warner Bros. Television logo starting with the following episode "The One With Mac And C.H.E.E.S.E.".
  • During the tag scene [they're blurred], you can see that Chandler has a bottle of Evian ® water in front of him and a Dasani ® water in front of Phoebe.

Goofs[]

  • When the gang is watching Ross on MTV, the top of the backdrop of the blue sky can been seen.
  • When Rachel is storming out of Central Perk after meeting the two guys, Monica, Chandler, and Phoebe are standing behind the couch. After Rachel asks Eldad about his hair and the camera angle changes, Phoebe appears to vanish in the broadcast and DVD versions, but if you look closely in the high definition version, you can see that she simply went to the left of the set behind the couch.
  • When Joey pushes Ross into his fridge, a red box falls from the top of the fridge onto the shelf beside it. A few moments later when Joey turns his body toward Chandler, the red box is back on top of the fridge.
    • In the same scene, when Joey stops blaming Ross to talk to Chandler, his arms change positions from crossed to by his side back in forth.
  • In the scene when Sebastian leaves Central Perk and Rachel says the line, "I cannot believe you guys", the boom mic can be seen at the top of the screen.
  • Joey says his parents bought the fridge when he was born, but when he moved in with Chandler, the fridge was already there.
  • When Rachel is talking to Phoebe about the guy she met at the book stall, she's clutching her bag but in the next shot she's finishing taking off her coat.
  • There is a captioning error on the DVD versions: Joey says 'If she's got enough money for that, she can certainly pat for the fridge she broke.' It should read pay not pat.
  • Rachel is about to leave the apartment after Joey talks to her about the fridge and as she says "you're joking", she starts to put her arm in the jacket sleeve. The camera pans to Joey and when it goes back to Rachel, the jacket is hanging over her arm.
  • When Elizabeth is about to tell Ross about spring vacation and another professor enters the office startling Ross, his necktie is crooked at first, but is straight when the camera angle changes.
  • In the remastered version, when Ross, Joey, and Chandler are entering Joey's apartment, you can see that there's a rectangular hole on the wall at the right hand of the screen.
  • In the episode, they concede that Elizabeth "slept with her professor," Ross. This is inconsistent with the next episode when Ross says they haven't "done it" yet.
  • Ross and Elizabeth dancing together on MTV would severely endanger their efforts to keep their relationship a secret from everyone at the university.
  • Phoebe describes Patrick to Chandler and Monica as having a chin dimple, but when Patrick is seen in person later, he clearly doesn't have one.
