Friends Central

"The One With The Kips" is the fifth episode of the fifth season of Friends, which aired on NBC on October 29, 1998. In it, Ross tells Rachel the truth about what Emily wants and Monica and Chandler go on a trip together for alone time and Monica's cleanfreak nature gets in the way.

Plot[]

After nearly getting caught together by Joey, Chandler and Monica decide to go away for a romantic weekend together, and they each tell the rest of the friends that they have to go away for work things. Monica gets upset when she finds lipstick on one of the glass tumblers in the bathroom and, after insisting they change rooms, finds something wrong with several more rooms before she finds one that satisfies her. Meanwhile, Chandler is trying to watch a high-speed car chase on TV and seems more interested in that than he does in spending time with Monica. They have a fight and Monica storms out of the hotel room. Back at home Chandler thinks things are over between them, which makes Monica realize Chandler has never been in a relationship that survived the first fight before. She tells him that it's nothing to freak out about and welcomes him to an adult relationship.

Ross tries to tell Rachel that Emily has demanded that he can't see her anymore and that he is going along with it to make his marriage work, but he fails because LaPooh died and her nose starts bleeding. When he finally manages to tell her, she initially thinks he's joking. When she realizes he's serious, she's furious and and worries that she will become the next "Kip", a reference to Chandler's former roommate who dated Monica and after a messy breakup got "phased out" of the group.

Phoebe is offended when Rachel claims that she always assumed that Phoebe would be the first one to be phased out of the group. However, Rachel convinces her to leave the group with her and start a new group. Phoebe agrees, but only if they can take Joey with them. Eventually Ross tells Rachel that since he's the one putting his marriage ahead of his friendship with Rachel he will be the one to leave the group, but Rachel tells him this doesn't make things better as she still won't be able to be friends with him later on.

A miffed Chandler returns home and tells Joey he didn't enjoy the trip, but he got to see Donald Trump waiting for an elevator. Later, the hotel where Chandler and Monica stayed called and left a message saying there was an eyelash curler left in the room. Joey confronts Chandler about it, outrageously suspecting that Chandler has gone on a gay cruise. Toward the end of the episode, While the whole group is together except Ross, Phoebe exclaims to Monica about how she heard that Monica saw Donald Trump in an elevator. Monica then asks Rachel if she can borrow her eyelash curler. Joey puts two and two together and starts to freak out. To keep him from exclaiming it to everyone, Monica and Chandler drag him into the bedroom and confess that they've been sleeping together, but swear him to secrecy. Outside, Phoebe claims to Rachel "We're so stupid! Do you know what's going on in there? They're trying to take Joey!"

The episode ends with the gang playing Mad Libs, until Monica sucks all the joy out of the game by trying to enforce her 'fun' rules.

Quotes[]

Monica: I'm really getting tired of sneaking around.
Chandler: I know. Me too. You know... What if we went away for a whole weekend? You know, we'd have no interruptions and we could be naked the entire time.
Monica: All weekend? That's a whole lot of naked.
Chandler: Yeah. I can say that I have a conference and you can say you have a... uh... chef thing.
Monica: Ooh! I've always wanted to go to this culinary fair that they have in Jersey!
Chandler: Okay! You know you're not, though.

[Monica, Chandler, Phoebe, and Joey are all trapped in Monica's room. Chandler has his ear pressed to the door.]
Phoebe: Can you hear anything?
Chandler: Oh, yes, somebody just said, "Can you hear anything?"
[Joey is searching for something under Monica's bed. Monica turns around and sees Joey's butt sticking out from the top of her bed.]
Monica: Hey, Joey's ass. What are you doing?
Joey: [About Ross and Rachel] Well, remember when they got in that big fight and broke up, and we were all stuck in here with no food or anything? Well, when Ross said "Rachel" at the wedding, I figured it was gonna happen again. So I hid this in here.
[Places a small box on the bed filled with candy bars and other things.]
Monica: Ooh! Candy bars, crossword puzzles...
Phoebe: Ooh, Mad Libs! MINE!
[Chandler finds a few condoms in the box.]
Chandler: Condoms?
Joey: You don't know how long we're gonna be in here. We may have to repopulate the Earth!
Chandler: And condoms are the way to do that?

Monica: These clowns are trying to take us for a ride and I'm not gonna let them. And we're not a couple of suckers.
Chandler: I hear ya, Muggsie!

[Monica and Chandler are having a fight caused by Chandler watching a car chase on TV]
Monica: Can we turn the TV off? Okay? Do we really want to spend the entire weekend like this?
Chandler: Oh, I'm sorry. Am I getting in the way of all the room switching fun?
Monica: Hey, don't blame me for wigging tonight!
Chandler: Oh, who should I blame? The nice bell man who had to drag out luggage to ten different rooms?
Monica: I don't know. How about the idiot who thought he could drive from Albany to Canada on a half a tank of gas?
Chandler: Do not speak ill of the dead.
Monica: We're supposed to, uh, be having a romantic weekend together. It... it... What is the matter with you?
Chandler: I just want to watch a little television. Geez, relax, mom.
Monica: What did you say?
Chandler: I said, "Geez, relax, Monnn."

Ross: You know how you told me I should do whatever it takes to fix my marriage?
Rachel: Yeah. I told you to give Emily whatever she wants.
Ross: And while that was good advice, you should know that what... what she wants...
Rachel: Yeah?
Ross: ...is for me not to see you anymore.
Rachel: That's crazy! You can't do that! What are you going to tell her? [awkward silence] Oh God! Oh, you've already agreed to this, haven't you?
[Rachel's eyes are filling with tears]
Ross: It's awful, I know. I mean, I feel terrible. But I have to do this if I want my marriage to work, and I do, I have to make this marriage work. I have to. But the good thing is, we can still see each other until she gets here.
Rachel: [clapping her hands] Oh! Lucky me! Oh my God, that is good news, Ross! I think that's the best news I've heard since LaPooh died!

Ross: What are you doing?
Rachel: Storming out!
Ross: Rachel, this is your apartment.
Rachel: Yeah, well, that's how mad I am!

Ross: [depressed] I don't want Rachel to hate me. I don't know what to do.
Joey: You want my advice?
Ross: Yes, please!
Joey: You're not gonna like it.
Ross: That's OK.
Joey: You got married too fast.
Ross: That's not advice!
Joey: I told you.

Ross: Hi!
Rachel: Hi. What are you doing here? Isn't this against the rules?
Ross: I talked to Monica. Look. I'm the one who's making things change, so I should be the one to, you know, step back.
Rachel: [interrupting] Oh, Ross...
Ross: No, no, it's okay. Really. There's plenty of people who just see their sisters at Thanksgiving and just see their college roommates at reunions and just see Joey at Burger King! So is... is that better?
Rachel: [long pause] No, it's not better! I still don't get to see you!
Ross: Well, what... what would you do? Rach, if you were me, what... what would you do?
Rachel: Well, for starters, I would have said the right name at my wedding!

Chandler: So, I guess this is over.
Monica: What?
Chandler: Well, you know, you and me. It had to end sometime.
Monica: Why, exactly?
Chandler: Because of the weekend, we had a fight.
Monica: Chandler, that's crazy. If you give up every time you'd have a fight with someone, you'd never be with anyone longer than... Ohhhhh.
Chandler: So, this isn't over?
Monica: [laughs] You are so cute! No. No, it was a fight. You deal with it and move on! It's nothing to freak out about.
Chandler: Really? Okay. Great!
Monica: Oh, welcome to an adult relationship!
[Monica goes to kiss Chandler.]
Chandler: [stops her] We're in a relationship?
Monica: I'm afraid so.
Chandler: Okay.
[They kiss]

Phoebe: Oh, hey, Monica, I heard you saw Donald Trump at your convention.
Monica: Yeah, I saw him waiting for an elevator.
[Joey thinks that sounds familiar because Chandler previously told him that he saw Donald Trump waiting for an elevator, but dismisses the thought.]
Monica: Hey, Rach, can I borrow your eyelash curler? I think I lost mine.
Rachel: Yeah, it's in there. [Points to the bathroom]
[Joey, who was informed by Chandler's hotel that someone left an eyelash curler in his room, puts two and two together.]
Joey: [shocked] Oh! Oh! Oh!
Chandler: Joey, can I talk to you for a second?
[Chandler grabs Joey and starts to drag him into Monica's room.]
Joey: Oohh! Oh! Oh, oh, oh! Oh, oh!
[Chandler pushes Joey through the door and Monica closes it behind them. Chandler tackles Joey onto her bed and tries to cover his mouth.]
Joey: Ohhhhhhhhhhh!
Chandler: Yes. Yes. [Lets him up]
Joey: [To Chandler] You?! [To Monica] And... and you?!
Monica: Yes, but you cannot tell anyone! No one knows!
Joey: How?! When?!
Chandler: It happened in London.
Joey: IN LONDON!!!
Chandler: The reason we didn't tell anyone was because we didn't want to make a big deal out of it.
Joey: But it is a big deal! I have to tell someone!
[They both grab him and stop him.]
Chandler: No, no, no, no, no! You can't!
Monica: Please. Please! We just don't want to deal with telling everyone, okay? Just promise you won't tell.
[Joey thinks it over.]
Joey: All right! Man, this is unbelievable! I mean, it's great, but...
Monica: I know, it's great!
[She goes over and kisses Chandler.]
Joey: Aww, I don't want to see that!

Trivia[]

  • In the uncut DVD version, when Ross and Rachel are in Central Perk, there is an additional scene at the start where Phoebe is performing and the place empties. Also, when Chandler and Monica first arrive at the hotel, they both shout that they are going to have sex.
  • The external shot of Chandler and Monica's hotel is the same one used in "The One In Vegas" .
  • When Chandler and Monica are arguing over the hotel bill in the hallway, Joey opens the door. Monica tells Joey Chandler stole a 20 from her purse, Joey replies with Rachel's catchphrase "Nooooo!"
    • Chandler states that Monica owes him $300 for her half of the trip, and says "Just think of it as $25 per room!". 300 divided by 25 equals 12, which means Chandler and Monica had to rent 12 different rooms in their room-shuffling adventure.
  • This is the first episode to mention that Ross and Chandler were roommates in college.
  • This is the third episode in a row where Monica and Chandler's relationship storyline involves them fighting.
  • This is the first episode where one of the other friends finds out about Monica and Chandler. Joey is the first one to figure this out.
  • It is weird that Monica being such a cleanliness freak never bothered to clean below her bed since returning from London.
  • When Chandler discovers that the car chase is over, we can hear the theme music of ER, which starred George Clooney and Noah Wyle, both of whom appeared in "The One With Two Parts, Part 2".
  • This episode was released the day before the movie American History X was released. Interestingly, Elliott Gould, who plays Monica's and Ross' father, Jack Geller, was in the movie as Danny Vinyard's (Edward Norton) English teacher, Mr. Murray, who dates Dolores Vinyard (Beverly D'Angelo).
  • This is one of a handful of episodes where the laugh track is different on DVD than TV.

Goofs[]

  • When Monica says "Connecticut or Vermont", in this shot, her hands are loose, but in the next shot, her hands are crossed.
  • Joey says he doesn't know who Kip is, however in "The One With The Dozen Lasagnas" (S1E12), he says to Chandler "I know all about Kip!" It is possible, however that he forgot.
  • When Rachel and Ross are talking in Central Perk, the jacket and purse behind Rachel on the couch keep moving.
  • Rachel tips her head back when her nose starts to bleed. This action will cause blood to run down the back of the throat and can cause choking. (This same mistake was made in "The One With The Race Car Bed" when Joey has a nosebleed after being punched by Phoebe).
    • However, this is not strictly an error, as the practice of tilting one's head back was conventional wisdom at the time of production.
  • When Joey initially figures out the truth about Monica and Chandler, he points at both of them. The camera pans to Monica, and Phoebe is beside the fridge. When the camera pans back to Joey and Chandler, Phoebe is suddenly on the couch.
  • When Joey figures out the truth about Chandler and Monica and Chandler drags him into Monica's bedroom, Monica is right behind them.  However, in the next shot, she is clearly three or four steps behind the two of them. Furthermore the shot of them entering her bedroom shows Monica going to close the door but the shot from inside her bedroom shows her closing the door. This is likely a continuation error owing to the bedroom sets being only partly constructed off the main living area. (The bedrooms are a separate set.)
  • At one point, Joey says "hey Rach" but his lips don't move.
  • When Joey falls asleep on the toilet, it is on the left hand side of the bathroom in full view. In other episodes, the toilet is on the other side behind the door.
  • In this episode, Monica says that Joey always sleeps until noon, but actually, Joey is seen to wake up early to sing with the singing guy in "The One With All The Haste". However, it can be possible that Monica was trying to trick him, and out of his sleepiness, he falls for it.
  • When Rachel selects the letter from her mom, the envelope is already open but when she sits down, it's sealed.
  • When Rachel storms out of her apartment, the wall behind the fridge moves a little when she slams the door.
  • In Central Perk, when Ross says "I'm going to the bathroom" his voice does not match up with the movement of his mouth.
  • When Monica first enters Joey and Chandler's apartment to settle the hotel bill, she is level with the door handle but after a brief shot of Chandler, she's about a foot further into the apartment.
  • When Chandler gets excited on the bed when he sees the car chase on TV, the blankets on the bed get pulled up and you can see there are no sheets on the bed.
  • When Ross is trying to tell Rachel that Emily won't let him see her anymore, Rachel is reading a letter from her mother and finding out that her family's dog died. Rachel's mother lives on Long Island, and it seems very unlikely that she would be sending Rachel a letter rather than picking up the phone and calling her.
  • When Ross finally manages to tell Rachel about Emily's request to not see her any more, she says "what are you going to tell her?" followed by "you already agreed to this, didn't you?" but she was with Ross when he was on the phone to Emily saying "that thing you wanted me to do, I can do it" after she told him to give her whatever she wanted, meaning she already knew he'd said yes.
