The Way We Were is the theme song from the 1973 American romantic drama film of the same name. It was recorded by Barbra Streisand, who also stars in the film.

In "The One With The Princess Leia Fantasy", Rachel says that The Way We Were is the most romantic song she's ever heard.

The song is written from the point of view of Streisand's character, Katie Morosky. The lyrics depict her melancholic relationship with Hubbell Gardiner, played by Robert Redford.

Light the corners of my mind
Misty watercolor memories
Of the way we were

Scattered pictures
Of the smiles we left behind
Smiles we gave to one another
For the way we were

Can it be that it was all so simple then?
Or has time re-written every line?
If we had the chance to do it all again
Tell me, would we? Could we?

May be beautiful and yet
What's too painful to remember
We simply to choose to forget

So it's the laughter
We will remember
Whenever we remember
The way we were
The way we were

The song was written by Alan Bergman, Marilyn Bergman and Marvin Hamlisch. The producer was Marty Paich.

It was first released in September 1973 as a single. The movie it is featured in was then released the following month.

The song won an Oscar — Best Music (Song) — at the 1974 Academy Awards.
